Winning pair granted land for degree centers – The Standard

Plots of land have been granted to Caritas and the Vocational Training Council to build learning centers for self-financed degree programs.

However, the University of Hong Kong School of Professional and Continuing Education failed in its bid.

The Education Bureau said yesterday the two nominal-premium sites at Tseung Kwan O and Chai Wan will go to Caritas Institute of Higher Education and the VTC Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong, respectively.

It is a step forward for the SAR in its attempt to become a learning hub, education sector lawmaker Cheung Man- kwong said.

The VTC welcomed the move, saying it will be able to provide professional courses based on a niche market.

It plans to start with six degree programs, which will in total offer about 210 places in the coming academic year, assistant media affairs manager Flora Chan Pui-ying said.

Cheung said both Caritas and VTC have strong backgrounds enabling them to develop into private universities of the future.

Caritas, founded by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, has education links worldwide and the VTC a long history of providing diploma courses.
