North East industrialists set on helping SMEs grow

AROUND 60 of the North East’s leading industrialists meet today to decide how they can help 400 businesses as part of a £1.5m business growth programme.

The region’s process industry group Nepic will next month formally launch its scheme aimed at creating 1,000 jobs and bringing in £40m of business to small and medium-sized enterprises in the North East.

The three-year scheme, backed by the Regional Growth Fund, will give mentoring and advice to the SMEs to help them grow.

This week leading business people are discussing how they can deliver the Business Acceleration for SMEs Project (BASME). They are being guided by Northumbrian Water chief executive Heidi Mottram and entrepreneur, developer and former Newcastle United chairman Sir John Hall.

“It is only business that can create wealth and growing local businesses is the only way that a region can improve the economic outlook for its people,” said Sir John.

“I am pleased to support this BASME programme because it is led by local business people and it is all about experienced local businesses helping smaller businesses find new sales and new markets to enable them to grow into the future. “ Three industrial leaders are heading up the programme’s 60-strong mentoring team.
