Derby College ‘training workforce of the future’ say inspectors

DERBY College has been praised by Government inspectors for its efforts to build a workforce for the future and support the training needs of local and regional businesses.

The college was rated “satisfactory” but was given a “good” for leadership and management and safeguarding, in its latest Ofsted report.

In their newly-published report, the inspectors said it was a “satisfactory and improving college”.

They praised its relocation to the Roundhouse campus in Pride Park and also its merger with South East Derbyshire College in Ilkeston in the past two years.

The inspectors said the Roundhouse campus had “brought tremendous benefits for learners”, and said there had been improvements since the merger with the Ilkeston college, to address issues highlighted in a previous report, which had rated part of the college provision as “inadequate”.

The college’s core business is further education for 5,000 16 to 18-year-olds.

There are also just over 9,000 learners on Train to Gain courses and 1,625 apprenticeships, both linked with local companies.

The report states that the college’s partnership working across the city has enabled it to “grow its work-based training significantly to meet employer needs”.

The inspectors also noted that “programmes were aligned closely to local and regional employment and opportunities for further study.

“Provision for unemployed adults results in good job outcomes,” the report pointed out. “Enrichment within the curriculum is wide ranging and sessions are well attended.”

College principal David Croll said: “This is a very detailed report with largely positive feedback about our work.

“I am particularly pleased with the findings that our young students are leaving us with strong employability skills – preparing them for the world of work – and that we are providing good quality work-based training to support the workforce of the future and provide employers with the skills they need to increase their competitive edge.”

To improve further, the college was told to ensure managers “monitor rigorously” learners’ progress towards completing assessments and course work.
