City charity for homeless in appeal to firms

A PLYMOUTH homeless charity is asking businesses to help support them getting people into employment.

Shekinah, which has a drop-in centre in Bath Street, is looking for volunteers to come to an event which will explain their ‘successful’ job coaching programme, organisers said.

Shekinah’s employability programmes help ‘hard to reach’ clients such as ex-offenders, former addicts, the low-skilled and long- term unemployed, to gain and sustain employment, with the support of a manager from one of Shekinah’s business partners.

This event will offer an opportunity for interested volunteers from local businesses to join a network of job coaches from a variety of other businesses in Plymouth.

Soo Brizell-Hogg, head of employability, said: “We work with a variety of clients who need additional support to ensure they have the best opportunity of returning to the workplace. We are asking local businesses to support our successful job coaching programme and really add value to the work we are doing in Plymouth to address worklessness.”

The event takes place at Rock Salt Café in Stonehouse on Thursday June 7.

It starts at 8.30am and should last an hour.

Soo added: “We really appreciate Rock Salt supporting us in this event and for providing this wonderful venue.”

She said that hundreds of people of all age groups accessed the training Shekinah provided.

“We give clients the extended time, emotional support and constant engagement they need to make positive change and achieve sustainable employment.

“Our funding enables us to work on each individual barrier that prevents the client from moving forward, allowing them to make progress at their own pace,” she said.

“We are looking for business people to volunteer to support them back into the workplace through the structured Ready for Work programme run in partnership with the national Business Action on Homelessness campaign,” Soo added.
