College apprentices scheme will help teenagers find jobs
A NOTTS college is to run apprenticeship programmes for 16-to-18-year-olds.
Dukeries College in Ollerton will offer courses in construction, business and administration, childcare, health and social care, forestry and motor mechanics. It is looking to link up with firms to provide ten apprenticeships for teenagers.
Alison Bateman, director of the adult and community learning department, said: “This is great news for local employers. We can work with young people already employed or help an organisation identify a young person that they may like to recruit to an apprenticeship scheme.”
The Post is currently trying to find 100 apprenticeship posts in 100 days as part of its Get Notts Working campaign.
Ms Bateman added: “The area we are in is quite isolated, so to be able to offer this kind of opportunity to young people is great news for the area.
“There is no cost to the employer for the training, just a commitment to allow the employee time to complete the programme. Additionally if you are an employer with fewer than 50 employees and have not previously employed an apprentice, you may be entitled to a £1,500 grant towards employing a young person.”
College principal Danny Smith said: “I would encourage businesses to get in touch as soon as possible. These are limited funds and we want every business to have the opportunity to benefit.”
The college already runs apprenticeships for people aged 19 and over, with 30 people starting courses since March last year.
Among them is Louise Allsop, who has just completed a Level 3 business administration apprenticeship.
She said: “I enjoyed the fact that I was basically just able to get on with the course working on my own initiative knowing there was support from the college if required.”
Get Notts Working supports people finding jobs. It is a partnership between the Post, Notts and Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce, the National Apprenticeship Service, Nottinghamshire City and County Employment and Skills Board, councils and companies.
